Introduction

The criminal justice field has numerous opportunities, with projected growth over the decade. And these jobs don’t always require an advanced degree. So why pursue a M.S. in Criminal Justice? Not only can a master’s degree provide broad knowledge and specialized technical training, but it can also prepare you for leadership roles and responsibilities.

We’ve designed coursework to increase individual ability and knowledge, as well as to develop analytical thought. Coursework examines contemporary issues in the administration of justice, counseling, crime control and delinquency prevention, as well as research and management challenges in criminal justice and correctional education.

The program complements the course curriculum through partnerships with federal, state, and local facilities, allowing graduate students to gain real world value. Coppin’s location in the Baltimore metropolitan area also allows you to take advantage of numerous field training, internship and cooperative education opportunities.

Graduate Course Load Expectations

Graduate students may enroll in the M.S. in Criminal Justice on a full- or part-time basis. A full-time course load is 9 credits per semester. Students also have an option to enroll in a part-time course load of 6 credits per semester.

Capstone

All graduate students must complete a final capstone experience. Student can choose one of the following options:

Non-Degree Students

The master’s is a degree-seeking program, but students may also enroll in courses in a non-degree capacity. With written approval from the department chair, a non-degree student may register for courses while waiting for an acceptance decision. Keep in mind, non-degree students cannot apply more than 21 credits toward any degree-seeking program.

Regardless of course load or degree status, all students must complete initial advising with the department chair before getting an assigned faculty advisor.

Why minor in criminal justice?

Criminal justice touches many aspects of modern society. As our society, country, and world continue to look closer at our criminal justice systems and institutions, it becomes even more important to learn how we got here.

Maybe you don’t have an interest in law and forensics, but you are interested in working with at-risk youth or underserved communities. Pursuing a minor in Criminal Justice can give you an overview of this broad field or even provide context for a different area of interest. The criminal justice field focuses on understanding the foundational laws, regulations, organizations, and institutions that address crime, criminals, and their victims.

Lead investigator at CSU, Dr. Johnny Rice, II, assistant professor of criminal justice, and a selected team of CSU students will investigate the contemporary causes of gun violence, specifically exploring why Black males ages 15-24 in marginalized urban communities possess and carry guns. The team will also explore factors that influence the impulse to carry a gun and what serve as triggers for gun use, based on the perceptions of African-American men interviewed, who live in affected communities in Baltimore city.

The grant was awarded to CSU by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), who received a $1 million grant by the National Collaborative for Gun Violence Research. To implement the study, TMCF brought together leading HBCU Criminal Justice researchers in Houston, TX, Wilmington, DE, Jackson, MS and Baltimore – leveraging the experience, knowledge and status of HBCUs in the African-American community to conduct research on attitudes toward guns ownership, possession, and usage by urban youth; the dynamics of social transmission of gun ownership and possession, carrying a gun, using a gun to threaten someone; and escalation to gun violence.

“This scientific study will allow our research team to engage and interview African-American men in affected Baltimore communities and acquire their unique perspectives on factors that influence gun possession and use,” said Rice, noting that he hopes the study can lead to ways to lessen the problem.

“We envision that the information gathered from this study will support community-based violence prevention efforts as well as criminal justice crime plans aimed at reducing gun violence. I am excited to work with our student researchers to address a systemic problem that continues to negatively impact the Black quality of life," Rice said.

In 2020, there was a reported 335 homicide victims in Baltimore, which reflected a high rate of deaths due to gun violence. As such, African-American males often are the main perpetrators of such violence as well as the majority of gun violence victims.

Other HBCU’s participating in the research project are: Texas Southern, Jackson State and Delaware State Universities.
