W.J. Mouat Student Recognized at Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Awards

A student from W.J. Mouat Secondary is being recognized for his leadership and commitment to giving back through school and community initiatives.

Grade 12 student Elan Chow received the Youth Champion of Diversity Award at the 23rd Annual , an award proudly sponsored by the Abbotsford Board of Education. The annual awards, hosted by Archway 天美视频 Services, celebrate individuals and organizations across the Fraser Valley who are helping build inclusive and welcoming communities.

Elan鈥檚 leadership has also been recognized within his school community. Earlier this school year, he was named Student of the Month.

鈥淓lan is a leader and a valuable member of our school community. He continually goes above and beyond and advocates for the student body through our Student Voice initiative. Along with other students, he helps run a weekly breakfast program, arriving early to prepare food that is available to all students to help them start the day,鈥 says Baljeet Gill, Principal at W.J. Mouat Secondary.

Through initiatives like this, students help foster a welcoming and supportive environment for their peers.

鈥淚鈥檝e only been able to contribute back to the community because the communities I鈥檝e been part of have accepted me,鈥 he shared, "I鈥檝e been able to contribute back to my own community and many different ways from volunteering, teaching music lessons, running community dinners, or starting a meal program at school."

He thanked the Bakerview Music Academy where he teaches, the Thrive Leadership Program and the Student Voice at W.J. Mouat Secondary.

The Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Awards highlight the important role individuals and organizations play in building connection and belonging across the region. The District's Communications team was also nominated for an award in the Intercultural Arts, Culture and Events category for their .
