Board restricts the use of artificial turf sports field

After months of negotiations, the Abbotsford Board of Education failed to reach an agreement with the City of Abbotsford around the artificial turf sports field located at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. At the June 14, 2022 in-camera meeting, the Board determined that the ongoing capital replacement and maintenance costs necessary to maintain the artificial turf sports field Agreement with the city would significantly impact the school district's budget.

Meaningful Work Creates Independence

Today is a work day for Michael. He makes sure that he leaves himself plenty of time to get ready. Once he鈥檚 showered, shaved, and brushed his teeth, he gets dressed for work, making sure that he puts on his name badge. Michael also makes sure that he鈥檚 packed his own lunch. When he鈥檚 ready to go, he gives himself enough time to get to work so that he won鈥檛 be late. Today it鈥檚 a nice day, so he鈥檒l walk to work. If it had been raining, his sister would give him a ride, something for which he is grateful.

WJ Mouat wins national careers competition for 6th time

School among 282 across nation that competed to be 鈥楥anada鈥檚 Most Informed鈥

W. J. Mouat Secondary in Abbotsford has won a national competition in career exploration.

The Let鈥檚 Talk Careers event was held by Skills Canada, Let鈥檚 Talk Science and ChatterHigh to engage students in career discovery and exploration.

The event ran from April 11 to May 20 on the ChatterHigh platform and gave students the opportunity to learn about careers in the skilled trades, technologies and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

The Paddle Project: A Grade 8鈥檚 Journey to Highschool

The conclusion of Grade 8 marks a significant milestone in a student's academic career as they look ahead to embark on a new chapter in their educational journey. This year, the Indigenous Education Department created The Paddle Project to honour a middle school student's transition into secondary school. While the project centers around the opportunity to share the teachings of the St贸:l艒 People, it also provides students with a meaningful and hands-on experience to reflect on their learning journey as they progress in life.

As we continue to celebrate National Indigenous History Month, we invite you to take part in a learning opportunity.

In 2018, Robert Bateman Secondary offered a unique Art Activism class, which empowered students to become leaders in their community through art. Every year students take on a different social issue and seek to make a difference and promote awareness through community art fundraising events.

Three Abbotsford students receive Beedie Luminaries scholarships

Program recognizes youths鈥 academic potential and 鈥榬esilience and resolve鈥

Three Grade 12 Abbotsford students have been named recipients of the Beedie Luminaries scholarship of up to $40,000.

Eun Sim and Navjot Garcha of W. J. Mouat Secondary and Nicole Rempel of Yale Secondary are among 157 recipients from 81 high schools in 30 communities across the province.

New Beginnings parent program in Abbotsford thanks community partners

Participants in the New Beginnings parent program in Abbotsford held a tea on May 26 to thank the community partners who helped them graduate.

New Beginnings is a partnership among the Abbotsford school district, Bakerview Centre for Learning, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, and Archway 天美视频 Services.

Since the program began in 1990, more than 1,000 parents have graduated high school. There were eight graduates in this year鈥檚 class.

Celebrating Our 2022 Retirees

As the 2021-22 school year comes to a close, we are congratulating our retirees from the Abbotsford School District. This year, we will see 55 employees retire from our schools and district sites. They have served as teachers, maintenance staff, custodians, clerical, youth workers and principals. And each and every day, they have made a difference in the lives of our students.

Art Activism class shines light on over incarceration of Indigenous people

Statistics released by the Office of the Correctional Investigator last December were sobering for those concerned with the over incarceration of Indigenous people.

Almost 50 per cent of all federally-sentenced women are Indigenous and the combined men and women proportion has now reached 32 per cent and appears to be climbing.
